First installment of the Zoning Project was completed in early 2005 and consisted of a series of "recording walks" the project members took around Machelen, Zaventem and Ninove, near the city of Brussels. The results of these recording trips, sound and pictures, were later treated to become the first basis of the zoning soundpool and documentation.

The zones they explored consisted of various types of "zonings", from decaying industrial lots to hightech centers. Most were at the same time silent and noisy, no sound source could be traced nearby but all had a noisy background coming from surrounding traffic lanes and motorways. Some sparse air condititionning devices, creaking gates and passing trucks completed the picture. Very few human activiy was visible, most being performed indoors, or having deserted the area.

The second step of the Zoning Project was completed in the Nettwerk in Aalst, were the first rehearsals begun in May 2005. The Zoning Quartet compared noted and defined the tone of the future performances. They foraged through their field recording soundbase to present a picture of the various zonings, and of the concept of zoning, that was at the same time a truthfull rendition of the zonings sonic reality, while incorporating treatments and re-constructions that reflected supplemented the objective aspects of the soundscape with extra subjective touches. The four laptop quatuor explored ways of presenting their findings, blending documentary aspects with sound composition, and also concentrated on putting together a sound set-up, combining different types of speakers, and various sound-directivity, to reflect this blend of ambiance and fiction. The first public try-out took place on the 20th May.
The third installment of the Zoning Project is a two-weeks residence in Genk, in September 2005, answering an invitation by TOR ( Tor vzw, werkplaats voor interdisciplinaire kunsten). This step of the project explore new horizons, both in term of places ( the zonings around Genk and Waterschei ) and devices. The project incorporate visuals, videos, aerial videography, fiction and text cuttings. The project members are settling and working in the disused train station of Waterschei, which will be the base of field-trips as well as performing place for the final presentation of this third step.
